Dr Layne Norton, PhD nutrition scientist and founder of Outwork Nutrition

Layne Norton, PhD: Founder, Nutrition Scientist, Powerlifter

Layne Norton holds a PhD in Nutritional Sciences and a BS in Biochemistry, both earned with honors. He is a drug free pro bodybuilder, a former IPF world record holder in the squat, and one of the most cited voices in evidence based nutrition. He is also the reason Outwork Nutrition exists.

Known the world over as ‘Biolayne’, Layne Norton built a loyal following with his ruthless and unapologetic approach to exposing the lies and exaggerations of the fitness industry. His mission is hyper-focused and unwavering: to crush BS with science.

Why He Built Outwork Nutrition

Layne spent the better part of a decade telling people which supplements were not worth buying. Underdosed formulas. Proprietary blends built to hide how little active ingredient was actually in the tub. Trendy compounds with zero human data, added purely because they looked good on a label.

At some point, criticizing the category stopped being enough. Outwork was built to answer a simple question: what would a supplement line look like if a nutrition scientist formulated it and nobody in marketing got a vote?

The answer is on every Outwork label. Full clinical doses. Every ingredient quantity disclosed. No proprietary blends. Nothing in a formula that
cannot point to human research. If the evidence for an ingredient is thin, it does not go in, no matter how well it sells.

That standard is not theoretical for him. Layne competes drug tested, which means every product carrying his name has to be something he can take himself while subject to testing. Outwork is manufactured in FDA inspected, cGMP compliant facilities in the United States, and every batch is third party tested for heavy metals, microbes, and allergens. Those are not marketing bullet points. They are the minimum bar for a company run by someone who has spent his career telling people to demand proof.

The commitment also cuts in the uncomfortable direction. When the research on an ingredient shifts, the formula shifts with it, even when the current version is selling fine. And when the honest answer to a question is that you do not need a supplement at all, that is what the Outwork blog says. A company built on evidence does not get to follow the evidence only when it is convenient.

Education and Credentials

PhD, Nutritional Sciences (Honors), University of Illinois
BS, Biochemistry (Honors), Eckerd College
Author, Fat Loss Forever and two more titles
Founder, Biolayne LLC
Co-Founder, Carbon Diet Coach
Co-Founder, Physique Coaching Academy

Published Research on Protein and Muscle Growth

Layne’s doctoral work focused on leucine and the regulation of muscle protein synthesis. That research helped shape how the field now thinks about protein quality, the leucine threshold, and how protein should be distributed across the day. It is also the reason Outwork’s protein and amino acid formulas look the way they do.

Competition Record

Layne competed drug tested at the professional level in two sports, which matters here for one reason: everything he recommends, he has had to make work on himself under the same rules he asks of everyone else.

Squat 668 lbs
Deadlift 727 lbs
Best total 1,781 lbs

Bodybuilding  ·  4 pro titles, incl. IFPA Pro International Heavyweight Champion

The Science Behind Every Outwork Formula

Layne reviews every Outwork formula personally, and every ingredient has to justify its place with human research before it makes the label. That is why our pre workout runs full clinical doses instead of a proprietary blend, why our whey isolate is dosed for a real leucine threshold, and why creatine monohydrate sits in the recovery formula at 5 g rather than a trendy alternative with less evidence behind it.

Supplements are not the reason anyone gets results. They are tools that support the work. The work is still yours.

Hard Work + Consistency = Results.
